Google's web design guidelines state: Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images. If search engine crawlers cannot recognize text in images, then it cannot recognize text in flash animation either, because flash animation uses images! And this means that if you want to optimize your web pages for the search engines, you should not create flash only web pages! Besides, a page that is full of text will load a lot faster than a page that is full of images or flash animation. Sometimes, a web page that is full of images and flash takes too long to load, causing the viewer to leave for another site. This does not mean that we should completely reject the use flash and images in our web design. On the contrary, flash and images can make a web page attractive. But what it means is that in addition to images and flash, our web design should take into consideration placing a sufficient amount of plain text on our pages.

Even though web crawlers cannot read text on images, it is possible for us to use some words to describe the images. If the images display correctly, the words cannot be seen. But if the images fail to load (this sometimes happens on slow connections), then the viewer will see the text that we have included to describe the image. Search engine crawlers can read this text, and a good web designer will try to include it with every image. However, it is not possible to include this sort of text for a flash animation.
