Google's web design guidelines state: Have other relevant sites link to yours. This is not really related to design, but it certainly is a very important part of search engine optimization. When your page gets a link from a page in another website (called a back link), search engines look at it as a thumbs up for your page. So the more back links your page gets, the more important your page appears to the search engines. But for the links to count, you must be getting links from pages that are relevant to yours (i.e. if your page is about cats, then the page giving the link must have something to do with cats). And the more important the search engines consider the linking page to be, the better it is for you.
